La Dolce Vita is a way of life that was born in 1950s Rome and that has taken the world by storm. Here you can read about the stories, the scandals and the popular haunts of this era.
The 1950s were an exceptional decade for the Italian capital. Roberto Rossellini and Federico Fellini were busy revolutionising filmmaking and Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida were just beginning their careers. The city was becoming a showcase for the blossoming Italian fashion industry. Hollywood stars and the international jet set had started to discover Rome and did not want to leave – not least because of the legendary nightlife in the via Veneto, Trastevere und the Piazza del Popolo. The whole city was a stage where everything was on public display and the paparazzi were ever present.
»Playboys, Popstars, Paparazzi« is a portrait of Rome during these ›Dolce Vita‹ years and charts the rise of this new mood in a city divided between tradition and modernity. It was not until the fifties that Rome truly became the capital of modern Italy and an international trendsetter in fashion, film, art and the media.
